The word came from the fields on the downs. The original club house was purchased in 1906 and known as The California Inn. The Inn, plus the extensions built by the Club, still stands and can be seen on the left hand side of Whipsnade Road. The clubhouse was sold in 1936 when the present day clubhouse was built.
Slight Dog leg left to right. A blind tee shot over the crest of the hill. The fairway extends to the left of the fairway bunker. This leaves a short iron with a straight approach to all flag positions. Go for the green from the tee and be prepared to accept the risk of a wayward shot. A very difficult green to putt on with severe slopes to read.
